Due to its design a single bit can be used for drilling a range of hole sizes which can speed up the installation of fixtures. Step drill bits are most commonly used on softer materials such as plywood, particle board, drywall, acrylic and laminate. Deburring holes left by other bits is an additional advantage of the step bit as the sharp increase between steps allows the cutting edge to scrape the surface of workpiece.High speed steel (HSS) is a form of tool steel, HSS bits are far more resistant to heat which can be generated when used at higher speeds. They are most commonly used to drill metal, hardwood and most other materials at greater cutting speed than carbon steel bits. The Rolson 48890 step drill set has been manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) and have been titanium coated for extra strength and durability. These double flute step drill bits allow precision drilling of 15 different sized holes with just three bits. The steps on these drill bits are in 2mm increments and the sizes on each bit are 4-12mm, 4-20mm and 4-32mm. They have been supplied in an aluminium case to protect against damage when not in use.
